Ship my own motorhome to Canada? Was I mad? Wouldn’t it have been cheaper to rent a Canadian RV?<\/p>\n

Well, it depends on how long for. I wanted to drive all the way to Alaska and back taking 90 days and rental would actually have been more expensive. In addition, most rental companies would not have allowed me to take the RV over the border to the USA and Alaska! For my 6 metre long motorhome, it cost just over 4000 Euro return freight costs and $1000 US for a special road insurance and breakdown policy. Now, many people spend that kind of money on a sea cruise and I definately know which I’d prefer!<\/p>\n

A German company called Seabridge Tours (www.seabridge-tours.de) can organise the whole thing and I decided<\/p>\n

to call at their offices whilst by coincidence near D\u00fcsseldorf in Germany. I completed the booking there and then before having my photo taken with the tour guides, who were just setting off with a group of German motorhomers for a tour of Scotland!<\/p>\n

I decided to drop off my motorhome at Liverpool docks for the 8 day voyage across the Atlantic using the frieght line ACL. I was not allowed to accompany the vehicle but I flew from Glasgow to Halifax Nova Scotia in time to complete the customs formalities at the docks there. After that, I simply had to pick up a Canadian Propane cylinder (UK cylinder banned from freight ship) and fit the handy adapter that Sea Bridge sold to me. I’d also picked up a 110v\/220v transformer but didn’t need it in practice, as I’d had 200w of solar panels fitted. Then it was off into the big country and an epic adventure.<\/p>\n

I’ve heard from Sea Bridge that future shippings will allow travellers, who wish, to travel on board the freighter with their motorhome. It’s not a cruise though, so a few books would be advised.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
