Blocks of Meaning

Learning with Stories, Language and Literacy Games

These are some teaching tools, which treat language like building blocks to help construct, expand and ehance meaning. Just like a child learns its first language by hearing, copying, correcting etc...

I am a retired music teacher but became interested in language and literacy during my career. I had the good fortune to meet the renown linguist Michael H.K. Halliday and many other linguists working on his theories of meaning and language. The use of his (et al) alternative Functional Grammar made a radical difference in helping those students who struggled with traditional teaching frameworks. This little website demonstrates a few of the online tools I developed and used in my teaching. They were initially developed for school desktop computers. They thus work best on laptops or PCs at the moment with a mouse. Updates for modern devices are planned.

The "Explanation for Teachers" illustrates how this new approach can help students achieve literacy in L1 and also in acquiring new languages.
